Pediatric Eye Exam FAQs
Pediatric eye exams are vision and eye-health evaluations adapted to a child’s age and ability to respond. Depending on the child, the exam may evaluate visual acuity, refractive error, eye alignment, focusing, and general eye health.
The specific tests depend on the child’s age, symptoms, history, and cooperation.
Testing may include age-appropriate visual-acuity checks, refraction to estimate a glasses prescription, eye alignment and movement, focusing, pupil responses, and examination of the eyes. Younger children can respond to pictures or shapes instead of letters.
An exam may also evaluate for amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye misalignment), and signs of other eye conditions.
A school or pediatric-office vision screening is useful, but it is not the same as a comprehensive eye exam. Children who do not pass a screening, have symptoms, or have relevant risk factors may need a full evaluation by an eye doctor.
If contact lenses are being considered, additional measurements and a separate fitting may be needed.
Eyes On Park offers pediatric eye exams starting at age four. The appropriate schedule depends on your child’s age, symptoms, risk factors, and prior findings.
The American Optometric Association recommends at least one comprehensive exam between ages 3 and 5, another before first grade, and annual exams for school-age children. Children at risk may need exams more often. Follow the schedule recommended for your child by their pediatrician or eye doctor.
